High Atlas mountains

High Atlas mountains

The High Atlas mountain range, also known as the Grand Atlas, is a mountain range that begins in the west and stretches towards the border with Algeria.

It is also the highest part of the Atlas Mountains. The mountain ridge's highest peak is the 4167-meter-high Jbel Toubkal which lies in the Toubkal National Park.

The High Atlas mountain range separates the Sahara desert to the southeast from the Mediterranean and continental zones that lie northwest of the ridge.

Despite the warm climate, the mountain ridge is often capped with snow. Making it a very popular place for winter sports and one of the three main winter sports locations in Morocco. The melting snow forms several river systems, most of those rivers Flo north and form an important watercourse to the villages and settlements at the base of the High Atlas Mountains.
