Three Sisters

Three Sisters

It is told these three peaks are sisters turned to stone.

The three sisters are a famous rock formation located in the Blue Mountains of New South Wales. This rock formation towers over the Jamison Valley, not far from Katoomba. And it is one of the most visited places in the Blue Mountains.

The rock formation itself consists of three pillars that are named Meehni (922 meters), Wilma (918 meters) and Gunedoo (906 meters). To encourage tourism the locals tell an urban legend about the formation. It is often claimed to be an ancient aboriginal legend where the three sisters fell in love with men from different tribes that they could not marry. This resulted in fighting and eventually, the sisters were turned to stone for their own protection. The shaman that turned the sisters to stone had died in that fight, leaving no one able to turn them back.
