Warragamba Catchment area

Warragamba Catchment area

Described by the aboriginals as the place of many waters, home to the Warragamba dam.

The Warragamba Catchment Area is located Southern region of the Blue mountains. Home to Lake Burrargorang and the 142-meter-high Warragamba Dam. Which is the main water source for drinking water in Sydney. Covering an area of 9051 square kilometres that is home to hundreds of threatened plant species.

Plans for the Warragamba dam go back to 1876 when the area was scouted as a possible water catchment area in 1845. The first proposal for the dam was in 1910, however, a site was only appointed in 1946. Allowing the actual construction of the dam to begin in 1948 and be completed in 1960. The construction of the dam barred off the Warragamba river, creating Lake Burragorang. This lake is one of the largest urban water reservoirs in the world.
