Marrakech

The city of Marrakech is better known as ‘the pearl of the south. It was the first of Marocco’s four imperial cities and is located in the Haouz Plain, which is a fertile irrigated area, with the Tennist River to the north. The oldest part of the city, known as the Medina, became a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1985. The Medina is also called the ‘red city’ because the buildings and ramparts of the Medina are made from a red clay. The Kutubiyyah Mosque near the Medina has a 77 meter tall minaret that dates back to the 12th century. And the Jamaa el-Fna square marketplace forms the vibrant heart of the Medina.

The city of Marrakech dates back to the 11th century when it was founded by the Yūsuf ibn Tāshufīn, who belonged to the Almoravids dynasty. The city is famous for its many beautiful parks, the Menera olive grove in particular. But the 405-hectare Agdal gardens are also a favourite among tourists.
