Neeltje Jans

Neeltje Jans

Neeltje Jans is part of the Oosterscheldekering and has been used as a work island after the delta barrier had been completed.

There is an information park and an amusement park built on the island where an exhibition about the Delta Works and their history can be visited. The island is about 285 hectares and owes its name to a ship carrying the same name that ran aground on the sandbar. On the island, a single remaining pillar can be found which was built extra around 1980, in case one of the other pillars turned out to be faulty. This 66th pier, however, has never been used and still stands lonely in its dock where it now houses a climbing centre.

Delta Works sightseeing flight

Midden Zeeland Airport

More than half of the Netherlands lies below sea level. The Delta Works were built to keep everyone safe and to prevent a recurrence of the 1953 flood disaster. 3 locks, 6 dams and 5 storm surge barriers form the Delta Works. They are the largest defence system against floods in the Netherlands. Anyone who wants to truly experience the Netherlands has to embrace the Delta Works as well- and a good way to do this is by plane!
