Maeslant Storm Surge Barrier

Maeslant Storm Surge Barrier

The Maeslantkering is the largest movable storm barrier in the world.

No other storm barrier has such large moving parts. This gigantic barrier can withstand a floor up to 5 meters above sea level. A single door is no less than 210 meters long, 22 meters high and 15 meters deep. When this barrier is closed, it fills with water, causing them to sink to the bottom within 2 hours. The construction of this barrier started in 1991 and was completed in 1997 and was completely closed for the first time in 2007. This closure takes place automatically at a water level of 3 meters above the regular level.
