Terschelling Dunes

Terschelling Dunes

The drifting dunes of Terschelling are now a well-known term among the local population.

When the island of Terschelling is approached by boat, the white heads of the drifting dunes can already be seen from the distance. The wind moves the dunes and entire growths of plants and dunes sometimes just disappear under the white sand. Due to the dynamic nature of this place, it doesn't look the same twice. That is why they are sometimes called living dunes. Many plant species that grow here depend on the drifting character of the dunes due to the shifting of limestone by the wind. In addition, the moving sand ensures that the grass does not grow too high, much to the delight of the rabbits, who like to eat the young grass.
