The town of Wanaka is about an hour's drive from Queenstown and is in the middle of New Zealand's "Southern Alps. It is a very suitable destination for a ski vacation in the New Zealand winter but is also worth visiting outside the winter months thanks to its beautiful nature. Lake Wanaka is world famous for its beauty. The town itself is a lot less touristy than Queenstown. Be sure to set aside a few days for this area, as there is plenty to see and do. If you are there in the summer, camping is highly recommended, but even if that is not an option, there are plenty of hostels and hotels in town.
